Manifesta 8: Final Project

Dwelling Andalus
The final project developed for Manifesta 8 is an interdisciplinary multimedia project that is composed of an experimental video documentary, two radio programs, one performance and three lectures.

Dwelling (the path of someone who dwelled in the past):
Video presentation in English & Spanish: Prison of San Anton, Cartagena

This experimental video presentation traces in the docu-fiction genre fragments of the Spanish Arab Andalus and the scholars who originated from its valleys who dwelled through North Africa to their resting places in the East. The figure of Abul Abbas Al Murci is followed from its birth in Murcia’s Ricote Valley to its resting place in Alexandria, Egypt.

Audio Project for Radio Program in Arabic & Spanish: Onda Regional de Murcia

This audio project is conceived and developed for broadcast as radio material. In 14 minutes, the story of Abul Abbas, his life in Murcia, Spanish Arab Spain, his North African stations, his works and his demise in Alexandria, Egypt are all recounted in a radio narrative manner.

Dwelling the Path of Ibn Arabi:
Audio Project for Radio program in Arabic & Spanish: Onda Regional de Murcia

This audio project is conceived and developed for broadcast as radio material. In two episodes of 14 minutes each, the story of Ibn Arabi, the Grand Master of Sufism in history, his life in Murcia & Seville in the Spanish Arab Spain, his North African stations in Morocco, Tunis and Egypt, his works and his demise in Damascus, Syria are all recounted in a radio narrative manner.

Dwelling The Rest of History:
Performance: guided tour in the prison of San Anton, Cartagena
30 minutes, 2010
A 30 minutes performance in which the artist, dressed in cliché-comic book striated shirt and barefoot, takes the audience in a guided tour through the cells and corridors of the San Anton prison, recounting the history of the prison. Embedded within the true historical facts, there are fabricated stories that compensates for the total lack of historical documents in any archives.

3 lectures by historians Martina Corgnati, Dermis Leon and Pablo Beneito
3 lectures, one hour each
Art historian and curator Martina Corgnati compares contemporary art practices across the Mediterranean. Art historian and Curator Dermis Leon compares practices of some Latin American artists living in Spain with some art practices from North Africa. While historian Pablo Beneito sheds light on the impact of Spanish Arab Andalus Sufi practices on North Africa today.
